About The Artist:
Artist Statement
I want the viewer to be pulled into my subject before he or she begins to think about how I got there. My automobile paintings probe into the relationships between “man and machine” combining realism and abstraction in a way that melds the familiar with the unexpected. Distorted objects reflected in the shiny surfaces create obscure images within the familiar curves of fender, chrome and headlight. When photographing the cars for painting, I often find myself reflected in the body of the car, becoming part of the object. Or is the car reflected in me, through my art? Our vehicles have become an extension of who we are and what we represent; asking the question, where does humanity end and machine begin?

Bio
Bobbie Crews is originally from Northwest Ohio, but has called Tennessee home since 1990. She works out of her studio in downtown Knoxville in the center of the arts district. Murals, portraits, design and other fine art have been her livelihood since 1993. She holds a BFA in studio art from the University of TN School of Art. Crews’ work is included in private and corporate collections nationally, in Bermuda and Africa. She works as a courtroom sketch artist, teaches workshops, and gives individual instruction in painting. She is married to Clay Thurston, an accomplished nature and wildlife photographer, who also joins Bobbie in photographing cars for her paintings. Bobbie is available to do commissioned works for clients.

About The Artist:
I was born in Maryville, Tn. in 1955. I was interested in art at the age of 4 years old. As my mother would sit and do sketches for me, I would sit along side her and watch. From that point on I knew what I was going to do with my life. I went to the University of Tennessee in 1975 and spent 3 years there working towards a BFA, but decided I had enough of school, lacking 24 hours towards graduating. So, I went to work in a small graphics firm in Oak Ridge, Tn., but I couldn’t make enough money, so I landed a job with Union Carbide Corp. Nuclear Div. I worked there for 3 years doing charts and graphs with a smattering of illustration thrown in. This wasn’t my idea of art.

I am a huge fan of the automobile as an art subject. At this time I was having some success at doing spot art illustrations for Road & Track Magazine. I read the magazine considerably, and one issue came out with a story about Tony Lapine, chief stylist for Porsche Auto then. He was an immigrant come to this country and ended up in Detroit to work in the auto industry. He climbed the corporate ladder with G.M. and ended up being chief stylist for them in Europe. From there he was hired away by Porsche, and said how much he appreciated the American people helping him along the way and giving him a chance.

I read this story with great interest and decided I was going to try and get a job with Porsche designing cars, thinking Tony might see in me the same thing he went through. I spent a year and a half drawing and designing cars. Even though I had no background in auto design, I figured it was time to take a shot. I sent a letter along with my portfolio I had contrived and with great surprise, I was hired. This was a great blessing to me, even working there for a short time.

After working there, I came back to the states and ended up in Florida. I went to work at Martin-Maretta Corp. working as an illustrator in the aerospace industry for 18 months. I, one day, was reading the classified section of the newspaper, I spied an ad for an architectural illustrator. Again, I had no experience in this field, but I wanted to try it. Again, I was hired and started learning another industry. I worked for them for 13 months and had started getting freelance work. So, it was time to move on again. I have been doing freelance now for 25 years with one interim of working with another architect for 18 months. I was let go from there 2 years ago because of this economic downturn. I’m back at my freelancing again and thats where I am today. Instead of architecture, I am back to the automobile, my first love, as a subject for my art.

About The Artist:
I grew up in a typical suburban New England town with an early passion for anything automotive. My mother still has the first car artwork I did at 4 years old that was recognizable. It’s a blue tow truck.

The passion for automotive art and design has been constant and intense throughout my life. I pride myself in the ability to not only make a “pretty picture” but to create innovative design solutions that are feasible and have impact. My work has been used by high profile and backyard builders alike to help visualize dreams, clearly communicate ideas, serve as motivation and blueprints or help to obtain sponsorship buy off. I work to bring fabricators, painters, upholsterers and owners together on the same page to reduce project wasted time and materials. Paper is cheaper than paint and sheet metal.

I try to make my renderings as accurate as possible while keeping an artistic element to them. Sometimes I keep proportions and perspective realistic and other times I like to add some drama to the art by posing the car in a dynamic way, making it appear more than just a pile of metal, rubber and glass. I use mixed media to keep things fresh using traditional markers and chalk as well as completely digital illustrations. It depends on the nature of the project or the budget. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

About The Artist:
Well I think it all started back in the 70s growing up in Warragul, (named after the local aboriginal people), a country town near Melbourne, Australia.

You can blame the 70s for a lot, but at least in our town it meant a fair bit of automotive activity. Admittedly a lot of that activity centered around custom vans, but there were some nice rods in town too. So as a kid, many of my first car drawings were of garishly painted vans with huge fender flares, and I am quite disappointed that I haven’t kept some of these.

I kept drawing cars through high school, but the real outlet came when in 1989 I started a degree in Industrial (Product) Design. Here I really started to learn to draw cars, despite the emphasis being on toasters, kettles, hairdryers etc. New cars were considered ok, but my projects were leaning heavily to restyling old cars. This was frowned upon and towards the end of my degree I had to appeal to higher powers in the university when one of my lecturers refused to give me a mark for my major subject. He didn’t believe that restyling and hotrodding vehicles from the 60s was a valid area of study… luckily the Dean of the Faculty did and I even received a degree with distinction.

Fresh out of University I started to do art for car shows and t-shirt transfer companies in Australia. The income was initially supplemented by graveyard shifts at 7-11. After a few years of drawing a lot of old Holdens, (General Motors Australian brand), the opportunity arose to live in the USA.

In late 94 my wife and I married. She’s an occupational therapist and in early 95 the USA was experiencing a shortage of them. It seemed like a good idea at the time and so we moved to sunny Pinellas County Florida where I continued drawing cars, but now for more American clients. In early 96 we moved again as I had been offered a job doing automotive art for a t-shirt company in Minnesota. In Winter. Now in Australia we know where to keep our snow… on the mountains, not in the cities, so we had little idea of what we were in for. It was a good place to learn a lot about color separation and t-shirt printing and we stuck it out for a couple of years, but with another winter looming we bailed out and headed back to Oz.

On arrival back in Australia I continued to do Hot Rod t-shirt art, mostly for American clients. Contact with the USA has been maintained through annual trips back and also by another extended stay during summer 2002, basing ourselves back in Florida, and more recently in 2006 staying in Huntington Beach CA for 3 months.

The outlet for my work started to change a bit in early 1999 when I started to do the first of many drawings for the Muscle Machines diecast range. Readers may know these models with exaggerated bodies, big rear tires, monster motors and side exiting exhaust pipes. One of the great things about doing these drawings is that I’ve been able to spend more time doing my cartoon style. The other is that you get to work on some kinda wacky vehicles that I’d otherwise be unlikely to get a request to work on. Now a 69 Camaro is a nice looking car, but after you’ve drawn fifty of them it’s nice to be able to do a supercharged Checker cab, Divco Milk Van or 1952 Mack B Model dump truck. Check out the “more cartoons” section of my website, www.rohanday.com for more examples of this stuff, as well as your better known hot rod models.

My own cars have been a little more sedate, but hey I drive them! That is with the exception of a 1966 Pro-Street Morris Mini I built back in 94. Rear tires from a top fueller didn’t get the nod from the registration authorities. In such a small car it also meant that there was only 4 inches between them. My current daily driver is a 1958 General Motors Holden Station Wagon and I have a rule of not owning cars newer than myself. (see below)

Who knows where the journey goes next. When I first graduated I did a lot more car stylist type renderings. These days the cartoon workload is pretty high. Recently I’ve done some cutaway drawings of some interesting projects and there are a couple new places that I think that screenprinted car art can go.

So long as it involves some kind of playing around with art and old cars… she’ll be right mate!
