About The Artist:
As an engineer turned artist my aim is to capture the glamour and excitement of road and track in oil on canvas. I have had a life long passion for motor racing and a desire to express this. I trained and worked as a professional engineer in the UK, including time on Concorde design in the swinging sixties. I always wanted to design racing cars but never had the chance; the next best thing was to be able to portray them in paint on canvas and the opportunity came when I was offered voluntary redundancy in 1993. I have been painting full time ever since. My portfolio also includes ships, aircraft and railways, but painting cars in action always gives me the biggest thrill.
My main interest is in the great cars and drivers racing on the classic road circuits of Europe, in the days when you could still get close to the action; modern formula 1 can still be exciting but the artistic opportunities are more limited. I strive to balance technical accuracy with an artistic feel for movement, time and place; detail is important but the ‘sit’ of a car on the track and that elusive atmosphere are even more vital. I work exclusively in oils, although often using acrylics for under-painting, as I feel the medium has the depth and strength needed for such a dynamic subject, whilst permitting subtlety of colour and the depiction of fine detail. A selection of my work, including limited edition prints, is shown on my website, which also includes details of how to commission a painting.
