Sunoco Porsche 917-30
This illustration of the Sunoco Porsche 930-17 is one I’ve been waiting to do for some time now.
Back in the early 70’s I was the one responsible for designing the color schemes for Roger Penske’s Indy and Can Am race cars. I lost all of my reference when I did the original sketches through the process of changing residences a few times, so it’s been a tough time finding good reference to draw from.
I’m sure you’ll remember the white Porsche 917-10 L & M Can Am race car prior to this blue 917-30 Sunoco Can Am car along with Penske’s first Indy 500 win with the McLaren Indy car in 1972. All three cars were the result of my efforts. I won’t go into the tremendous success these cars achieved but I can assure you it wasn’t because of my color designs.
Penske offered to fly me to his race shop in Newtown Square, Pensylvania and help layout the masking tape on the blue Sunoco Porsche 917-30 car for the color scheme to be painted. It was obviously a pretty exciting time. I also got the opportunity to meet Mark Donohue and Peter Revson who were two of his top drivers at that time. Pretty neat stuff.
